About
Bellevue Belmont Reds is a small family run cattle stud in the scenic rim near Boonah with another property at Maryborough. We adhere to the original Belmont philosophy of objective measurement for economically important traits measured under natural and commercial conditions. Our bulls are raised under genuine pasture conditions; not sorghum or oats. Bulls are raised in tick country and are not treated for ticks. All measurements for EBV's are taken under these conditions.
Understanding EBV’s
An estimated breeding value (EBV) is the scientific method of using the measured values of traits to estimate the genetic worth of an animal. It is the only guaranteed method of predicting the potential of an animal’s genetic merit.
The EBV of a Belmont Red is calculated related to ALL other animals recorded within the Belmont breed. From the time measurement of traits were first recorded for the breed, all data is kept. All subsequent data inputed into the system from all animals uses this information. The information of the original or base animals is the reference point for the breed . For example, if a bull has an EBV of + 40kg for 600 day weight, it indicates that the progeny of that bull will be 40 kg heavier at 600 day than those of the original bulls , if they are reared and managed identically.
Herd Profitability
In the harsh Belmont Research Station environment, Belmont Reds produced 20kg of weaning weight per cow mated more than the Brahman Cross. In a more benign environment Narrayen Research Station, Belmont cows produced 15kg more than the Herefords on both Spear grass and Improved pastures.
Belmonts have the best marbling, and surpassed even the Angus under pasture and feedlot conditions in the North.

Heat Resistance
According to Belmont Australia, when compared to British breeds, about 25% of the higher growth of Belmonts was accounted for by their heat tolerance.

Fertility
We select on fertility. Cows are culled if they do not produce a calf every year. Measuring fertility is important as it results in improved economic returns.

Docility
There is increasing evidence that temperament is not only advantageous for animal and people safety , but also for meat quality.

Tick Resistance
Bulls are raised in tick country and are not treated for ticks. All measurements for EBV's are taken under these conditions.

Genetics/Heritability
We're all about genetics. With a focus on producing high-quality cattle, our breeding program harnesses the power of genetics to create superior livestock. From improved growth rates to improved fertility, we're dedicated to advancing the science of genetic selection for our beloved reds.
